Blind spot monitoring

Most vehicles before 2015 never offered blind spot monitoring. Aftermarket BSM kits use rear-mounted radar or cameras to light up an indicator in your side mirror when a car is next to you. Real safety upgrade, especially on trucks and SUVs with thick C-pillars.

Two technologies dominate: radar-based systems that mount inside or behind the rear bumper, and camera-based systems that watch the side lanes from the rear of the vehicle. Radar handles weather better. Cameras work better at distinguishing vehicles from stationary objects.

Professional install is the right call here. The radar modules need precise aiming and the indicator LEDs need to be mounted into your side mirrors cleanly.

Top pick

Brandmotion BSDS-7710

Brandmotion · BSDS-7710
~$500

Radar-based BSM with mirror-mounted LED indicators. The closest aftermarket BSM gets to factory.

Why we picked it

Two radar modules mount inside the rear bumper, detecting vehicles in adjacent lanes. LED indicators get installed into your side mirror housings so the alert lives where your eyes naturally go. The system also handles cross-traffic alerts when reversing. This is the most OEM-like aftermarket BSM available.

Watch-outs

Professional install strongly recommended. Radar modules need proper aiming and the mirror LEDs need clean wiring through the door jamb. Budget $200-400 for install.

Brandmotion Vision-7900

Brandmotion · Vision-7900
~$600

Camera-based blind spot monitoring. Better object recognition than radar in some scenarios.

Why we picked it

Uses rear-mounted cameras instead of radar. Better at distinguishing actual vehicles from guardrails, parked cars, and stationary objects that can trigger radar false alarms. The right call if you do a lot of urban driving where radar systems get confused.

Watch-outs

Camera-based systems work less well in heavy rain or snow. Still requires professional install for clean mirror LED integration.

Rydeen BSMD-MX

Rydeen · BSMD-MX
~$350

Budget radar-based BSM kit. Two-thirds the price of Brandmotion with most of the functionality.

Why we picked it

Rydeen has been in the blind spot monitoring space for years and the BSMD kit is the most affordable real-radar system that gets consistent positive reviews. Same install approach as Brandmotion (rear bumper radar + mirror LEDs) at a lower price point.

Watch-outs

Build quality is a step below Brandmotion. Customer support is harder to reach. Install difficulty is the same.
