Our take
What it really is
The 4th gen Expedition shares its aluminum-intensive T3 platform and 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with the F-150. The Navigator uses the same frame with more premium content. The IRS rear suspension is a genuine advantage over solid-axle competitors.
Why it's on this list
3-row capacity. IRS for better ride quality than Suburban/Tahoe at highway speed. 476-mile range on 28 gallons. Ford's 3.5L EcoBoost proven at 200k+.
The honest trade-offs
Power running boards fail chronically. Budget for replacement. Panoramic roof water pooling into the headliner is documented with a TSB. Aluminum body collision repair is specialty work.
What to buy and what to avoid
XLT or Limited. Avoid King Ranch and Platinum for the price premium. 2020-2022 for the updated safety technology. Max package for the extended-wheelbase if you need the 3rd row for adults.
