Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

The G80 was developed by ex-BMW engineers and targets the E90/F30 BMW 3 Series as its benchmark. The 3.3T twin-turbo V6 produces 365hp. The RH platform is bespoke, not shared with Hyundai mass-market products.

Why it's on this list

5-star NHTSA. IIHS TSP+. Genesis includes 5 years/60k miles bumper-to-bumper warranty from new. Many used examples are still under coverage. The brand depreciation is your gain.

The honest trade-offs

Genesis has fewer than 100 dealers nationwide. Parts availability lags Japanese and European brands. Independent mechanics are unfamiliar with the platform. Dealer dependency is real. Buy within warranty range or budget for dealer service costs.

What to buy and what to avoid

2018-2020 examples still under the 5yr/60k warranty or Genesis CPO. The 3.3T RWD is the buy. AWD adds weight and complexity without meaningful traction advantage in most climates. Verify warranty status before any purchase.
