Honda Pilot (1st Gen)
03-08 · Honda Pilot

Our take
What it really is
Honda's first proper 3-row SUV on a unibody platform. The J35A4 V6 is naturally aspirated and makes 255hp, but critically uses a timing belt (NOT chain). 105k belt interval is strict, budget $600–900 if it hasn't been done. No ESC on most trims. IIHS Good.
Why it's on this list
Honda reliability in an 8-passenger package under $10k. Widely serviced, parts accessible, and the J35 family has proven durable past 200k miles with proper timing belt service.
The honest trade-offs
Timing BELT, non-negotiable service at 105k miles. No ESC standard. Fuel economy modest at 20 combined. Transmission fluid service is commonly skipped, verify history. 03-04 had transmission issues that Honda extended warranty on.
What to buy and what to avoid
06-08 EX-L with AWD. Verify timing belt replacement history, this is the single most important maintenance item. Avoid 03-04 if possible (transmission concern). Check transmission fluid color.
