Toyota RAV4 (3rd Gen)

06-12 · Toyota RAV4

85out of 100

The 3rd gen RAV4 with the 2AR-FE is the compact SUV reliability benchmark, same engine as the Camry XV50, standard ESC, and Toyota-level durability at $9k–$14k.

Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

Toyota's first RAV4 with standard ESC across all trims and a proper 2.5L engine. The 2AR-FE is chain-driven and the same unit used in the Camry XV50, a well-proven engine. 5-star NHTSA, IIHS Good. AWD system is mechanical and reliable.

Why it's on this list

The compact SUV equivalent of the Camry XV40, high reliability, good safety, and Toyota pricing on the used market. A clean 10-12 Limited is outstanding value.

The honest trade-offs

2.5L is adequate but not quick. Fuel economy mediocre at 26 combined. The optional third row (on some trims) is tiny and should be avoided. No turbo option for those who want more power.

What to buy and what to avoid

10-12 Limited or Sport AWD. Standard ESC on all trims. Verify AWD engagement and timing chain at higher mileage. No major known powertrain issues.
