Our take

What it really is

The Sequoia's 3UR-FE 5.7L V8 is the same engine as the Land Cruiser 200 and Tundra. Toyota sold this vehicle on reliability and capacity, not innovation. It has not changed meaningfully since 2008, because it didn't need to.

Why it's on this list

39.1% chance of reaching 250k miles, 8.1x the industry average. 120 cu ft max cargo. Full-size 3-row seating. Toyota drivetrain reliability in the largest body available.

The honest trade-offs

14 MPG combined. The 8.7-qt oil capacity means expensive oil changes. The interior was not updated from 2008-2022. It shows. Parking a full-size SUV in urban environments is a constant exercise.

What to buy and what to avoid

2013+ for the updated infotainment. Platinum trim if you care about the interior. Toyota spent money there. Avoid the V8 oil changes at the dealer. Independent shops charge significantly less for the same synthetic.
