Toyota Tacoma (1st Gen)
95-04 · Toyota Tacoma
The 1st gen Tacoma is the most reliable compact truck ever made, the 3RZ-FE or V6 5VZ-FE will run forever, but the frame rust issue on pre-2005 examples is so severe that Toyota ran a buyback program.
Score breakdown
Our take
What it really is
A legendary compact pickup with Toyota's most durable truck engines. The 3RZ-FE 4-cylinder is chain-driven and nearly unbreakable. The 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6 is equally bulletproof but uses a timing belt. The single issue that makes or breaks the purchase: FRAME RUST. Toyota ran a frame rust buyback for 1995.5–2000 models in high-rust states. 01-04 frames were improved but still rust in the northeast/midwest.
Why it's on this list
Legendary Toyota compact truck reliability. For a southern/western buyer where frame rust isn't an issue, a 1st gen Tacoma is among the best trucks ever sold in America. Even at 200k miles with documented maintenance, they run.
The honest trade-offs
Frame rust is a DEAL BREAKER in rust belt states, do not buy without an in-person undercarriage inspection. No ESC. 3-star NHTSA. 30% rollover risk. The 5VZ-FE V6 uses a timing belt, budget for it. Western/southern examples are worth a premium for the clean frame.
What to buy and what to avoid
Any western/southern example with documented history. MANDATORY: professional undercarriage inspection before purchase, frame perforation is a safety and structural issue. 01-04 PreRunner or 4x4 with 3RZ-FE or 5VZ-FE. The V6 is worth the timing belt service cost for the extra power.
