Our take
What it really is
The last driver-focused rear-wheel-drive BMW before the switch to turbos and AWD. The N52 inline-6 is one of the smoothest engines BMW built.
Why it's on this list
RWD balance and a proven I6 at used-car prices. One of the few luxury sedans in this price range worth driving for its own sake.
The honest trade-offs
Premium fuel, premium parts costs. HPFP failure on early cars, cooling system components need proactive replacement. Carbon buildup on direct-injection engines.
What to buy and what to avoid
Get the 328i with the N52 naturally aspirated I6 (06-11). Skip the 4-cylinder 320i. Manual is the better choice. Verify CPO history if you can find it.
Annual cost of ownership
Premium fuel. Includes coolant expansion tank, valve cover gasket lifespan costs amortized.
Key specs
Also available in wagon, coupe. The score reflects the primary body style listed above.
Safety
Rust vulnerability
Rocker panels and wheel arches susceptible in salt belt. Subframe corrosion reported on some examples.
Known issues by mileage
Plastic components degrade — replace proactively at 80k
N52 naturally aspirated not affected
Common oil leak — DIYable
Best and worst years
Best years
- 2008N52 I6 most refined; pre-N54 reliability concerns
- 2009Updated suspension tuning; good reliability record
Years to avoid
- 2007First model year; HPFP failures on N54 turbos; buy N52 instead
Reliability data
Repairability
Good OEM and aftermarket availability. Walnut blasting for valvetrain carbon buildup ~$400 every 60k.
