Our take
What it really is
The C4 introduced active suspension, ABS, and traction control to the Corvette. The LT1 5.7L V8 (1992-1996) is the engine worth having: 300hp and significantly better than the L98 it replaced.
Why it's on this list
The C4 is the cheapest way into the Corvette tradition. 35+ years of aftermarket development means parts are available for everything. The LT1 years (1992-1996) offer genuine performance for under $12k.
The honest trade-offs
This is a 30-year-old car. Electrical gremlins are age-related. The anti-theft lockout is chronic on neglected examples. Early C4 (1984-1987) build quality was inconsistent. Pop-up headlights require a functional motor.
What to buy and what to avoid
1992-1996 LT1 only. The prior L98 is not worth it for a daily or occasional driver. All examples need a thorough PPI. Convertible adds desirability but adds complexity. Do not buy a C4 without an inspection from someone who knows the platform.
