Ford F-150 (12th Gen)

15-20 · Ford F-150

74out of 100

The aluminum-body 12th gen is the most capable F-150 ever at this price, but the aluminum repair premium and EcoBoost complexity are the honest tradeoffs against the 11th gen's steel body simplicity.

Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

Ford's milestone aluminum-body F-150 with significantly better fuel economy, payload, and safety ratings. Body panels are aluminum alloy, collision repair is expensive and requires specialized shops. The 5.0L Coyote is the most reliable engine choice. The 3.5L EcoBoost is more powerful but adds complexity. Pre-collision assist and blind spot monitoring available from 2015.

Why it's on this list

The best payload and safety ratings in the class. At $22k–$32k for clean examples, the 12th gen delivers modern truck capability. Aluminum body is not a reliability concern unless you crash it.

The honest trade-offs

Aluminum body repair is 2-3× more expensive than steel. EcoBoost adds turbo complexity. 3.5L EcoBoost cam phaser issues documented on high-mileage examples. RepairPal 3.5/5. The 10-speed automatic introduced mid-cycle has shudder issues on some units.

What to buy and what to avoid

18-20 XLT or Lariat with 5.0L Coyote V8. If buying EcoBoost, verify cam phaser and 10-speed condition. The 5.0L with the 6-speed or 10-speed is the most straightforward powertrain. Pre-collision assist and blind spot monitoring are worth speccing.
