Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

The best Wrangler for the money. The 4.0L AMC I6 is a pushrod inline-six of near-mythical durability, 190hp and 235 lb-ft, will run 300k miles with oil changes. Body-on-frame, solid front axle, coil spring suspension. Extremely capable off-road. No ESC, 37% rollover risk, 3-star NHTSA, these numbers are genuinely bad and you must know this going in.

Why it's on this list

The off-road benchmark at $8k–$18k. The 4.0L I6 TJ has an enormous parts ecosystem, a massive modification community, and class-leading trail capability. For a buyer who primarily wants a recreational off-road vehicle and understands the safety limitations, there is no better value.

The honest trade-offs

37% rollover risk is among the highest in the automotive universe, this is a vehicle that will roll if pushed beyond its limits. No ESC. 3-star NHTSA. Frame rust on northern examples is severe, inspect front to back. 16 MPG combined. This is not a commuter car.

What to buy and what to avoid

03-06 Unlimited or Sport Rubicon with 4.0L I6 and 6-speed manual. Frame rust inspection is mandatory. Soft-top vs. hardtop is a lifestyle choice. The I6 is the only engine to consider. Western examples without frame rust command a premium.
