Our take
What it really is
A practical all-wheel-drive wagon/crossover with Subaru's flat-4. The EJ253 uses a timing belt AND has documented head gasket failure between 80k–150k miles on most examples. Head gasket replacement is $1,200–2,000 and is essentially scheduled maintenance on this engine. No ESC standard.
Why it's on this list
Standard AWD, good cargo space, and IIHS Good at prices under $8k. If the head gasket has been replaced and documented, the 3rd gen is acceptable value. Without documentation, you're buying a known repair within your ownership.
The honest trade-offs
Head gasket failure is nearly universal above 100k miles, non-negotiable inspection item. Timing belt due every 60k miles. No ESC standard. RepairPal $652/yr average. Rust on rear wheel arches common in salt belt states.
What to buy and what to avoid
07-09 with documented head gasket replacement and timing belt. Non-turbo 2.5L only. Avoid 2.5T turbo (more complex head gasket scenario). ESC not available on most trims, accept this.
