Ford Fusion (1st Gen)

06-12 · Ford Fusion

84out of 100

The 1st gen Fusion was Ford's honest answer to the Camry and Accord, not as reliable, but competitive in comfort, and a solid domestic alternative for buyers who want US-built.

Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

A competent midsize sedan that punched above its domestic reputation. The 2.5L Duratec is chain-driven and reasonably durable. Maintenance costs run higher than Japanese competitors. ESC wasn't standard until 2010. RepairPal gives it 4.0/5 reliability, respectable for a domestic of the era.

Why it's on this list

Low purchase prices ($5k–$8k for clean 10-12) and good cargo space. The 10-12 models with standard ESC are the safest pick. Independent shop coverage is excellent. Ford parts are everywhere.

The honest trade-offs

Higher maintenance cost than Honda/Toyota competition ($581/yr vs. $388). ESC optional pre-2010. Powertrain in 3.0L V6 trim is more complex, stick to 2.5L 4-cylinder. Timing chain tensioner issues documented on some 2.5L examples above 120k miles.

What to buy and what to avoid

10-12 SE or SEL with 2.5L 4-cylinder and ESC confirmed. Verify timing chain noise at cold start above 100k miles. Avoid V6 for lower long-term costs.
