Our take

What it really is

Toyota's third-generation Prius with the 1.8L Atkinson-cycle engine paired to a NiMH hybrid battery pack. The 2ZR-FXE is chain-driven and extremely durable. Hybrid battery failure is the main concern, but battery packs typically last 150k–200k+ miles in non-extreme climates. A failed OEM battery replacement costs $1,500–$2,500. Aftermarket options are available for less.

Why it's on this list

50 MPG, $408 annual maintenance, and standard ESC. At $8k–$12k for a clean example, the 3rd gen Prius offers the lowest total annual operating cost of any car in this segment by a wide margin.

The honest trade-offs

Hybrid battery degradation in hot climates (Arizona, Texas) is accelerated, check battery health codes. Not enjoyable to drive. Cargo area is compromised by the hybrid battery under the cargo floor. Replacement inverter coolant pump is a known maintenance item ($200 DIY).

What to buy and what to avoid

12-15 Three or Four trim. Check hybrid battery health (Toyota Techstream or a scanner that reads hybrid codes). Verify inverter coolant pump works, listen for gurgling. Avoid salvage-title examples (hybrid battery data is unverifiable). In hot climates, get a battery health report before buying.
