Toyota Corolla (10th Gen)

09-13 · Toyota Corolla

91out of 100

The E140 fixed everything the E120 left unfinished, the 2ZR-FE engine is cleaner, ESC is finally standard, and the IIHS went to Good.

Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

A properly sorted compact. The 2ZR-FE replaced the oil-consumption-prone 1ZZ-FE and added Dual VVT-i. ESC became standard in 2009. IIHS upgraded from Acceptable to Good. The E140 is the Corolla that actually deserves its reputation.

Why it's on this list

The sweet spot of the Corolla lineup for used buyers. Cheap enough to be accessible, reliable enough to ignore, and ESC-standard so it passes a modern safety bar that the E120 missed.

The honest trade-offs

Interior quality is still average. The 5-speed manual is crude. 2009 models predate the full 2ZR-FE refinement, prefer 2010+. Fuel economy dropped slightly vs. the E120.

What to buy and what to avoid

11-13 LE or S with automatic. ESC is standard on all trims from 2009. Avoid the first model year (2009) if you can, slight teething issues with the 2ZR-FE were sorted by 2010.
