Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

Toyota's most refined Prius. Built on the TNGA-C platform with a lower center of gravity, stiffer chassis, and standard Toyota Safety Sense P (pre-collision, lane departure, auto high beam). The 2ZR-FXE remains the engine. The hybrid system is updated with better efficiency. Li-ion battery option on AWD-e models (standard NiMH on non-AWD).

Why it's on this list

52 MPG combined with Toyota Safety Sense standard at $12k–$18k used. The 4th gen is the most complete Prius package and has the lowest total annual operating cost of any car on this site.

The honest trade-offs

Styling polarizes, some buyers find the Gen 4 difficult to live with visually. Not enjoyable to drive. Cargo at 19.8 cu ft is reduced vs. Gen 3 (21.6) due to suspension changes. AWD-e models have a smaller battery and lower MPG, factor that in.

What to buy and what to avoid

18-20 LE AWD-e if you're in snow country. 17-19 Two or Three for the best MPG. Toyota Safety Sense P is standard across all 4th gen trims. Verify battery health on any example above 80k miles.
