Toyota Corolla (9th Gen)
03-08 · Toyota Corolla
The E120 generation brought the 1ZZ-FE, a chain-driven four that, oil-consumption quirks aside, outlasts most of what it competes against.

Our take
What it really is
A straightforward compact sedan built to last, the E120 was the first Corolla to fully modernize the interior. The 1ZZ-FE engine uses a timing chain and VVT-i, though higher-mileage examples can burn oil, budget for consumption checks above 100k miles.
Why it's on this list
Cheap to insure, cheap to fix, and widely available. The 1ZZ-FE is well-understood by every independent shop in the country. Parts are inexpensive and plentiful even for a 20-year-old car.
The honest trade-offs
The 1ZZ-FE oil consumption issue is real on high-mileage examples, do a cold-start compression test and check the dipstick before buying. No ESC on any trim. Interior quality is basic even by economy-car standards.
What to buy and what to avoid
05-08 XRS models have the 2ZZ-GE engine which avoids the oil consumption issue entirely. For standard S or LE, look for a clean 06-08 with service records. Avoid any example that smokes at startup.
