Chevrolet Malibu (8th Gen)

08-12 · Chevrolet Malibu

83out of 100

The 8th gen made a real safety jump, 5-star NHTSA and IIHS Good, while keeping the Ecotec. The direct injection 2.4L added a carbon buildup concern, but it's manageable.

Score breakdown

Our take

What it really is

A noticeably improved Malibu with much better crash performance. The LE9 2.4L uses direct injection, which means intake valve carbon buildup at higher mileage (50k+ interval walnut blasting recommended). ESC is optional but not standard on base trims. 5-speed automatic is adequate.

Why it's on this list

Strong safety ratings at a low price point. A clean 10-12 with ESC and documented service history is $6k–$9k and offers genuine midsize comfort.

The honest trade-offs

ESC optional, not standard on all trims. Direct injection carbon buildup on LE9 engines above 60k, budget $200–400 for intake cleaning. Interior materials feel domestic. Steering feel is vague. The 3.6L V6 LFX is more reliable but costs more.

What to buy and what to avoid

11-12 LT or LTZ with ESC package. Confirm ESC is equipped. Clean the intake valves if purchasing above 60k miles. Avoid first model year (2008), minor quality refinements came in 2009+.
